The United Arab Emirates has steadily reformed its tax landscape, culminating in the introduction of Corporate Tax. The journey began with Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, which officially established the Corporate Tax framework.
This foundational law, issued on October 3, 2022, became effective just fifteen days after its publication in the Official Gazette. It marked a significant shift, laying the groundwork for how businesses would be taxed across the Emirates.
Since its inception, the law has undergone crucial refinements to ensure clarity and adaptability. Federal Decree-Law No. 60 of 2023, issued on October 2, 2023, came into effect a month later, on November 1, 2023, introducing initial amendments to streamline certain provisions.
Further updates arrived with Federal Decree-Law No. 40 of 2024, issued on October 1, 2024. Interestingly, this latter amendment was retroactively applied, with an effective date of June 1, 2023, aligning it with the general applicability date of the Corporate Tax Law for most businesses.
For tax periods commencing on or after June 1, 2023, businesses must adhere to this evolving legislative framework. These amendments showcase the UAE’s commitment to creating a robust yet dynamic tax system that adapts to global standards and local economic needs.
Staying informed about these historical and ongoing changes is paramount for businesses to ensure full compliance and strategic tax planning in 2025 and beyond.
